As part of our ongoing development work with the Splendid Hotel Group, we were appointed to create a new dining pavilion, to help with the Group’s ambitions to extend and enhance the facilities at its flagship Grand Hotel in York.
The 120-cover restaurant, designed for both hotel guests and casual diners, is located within a pavilion on an existing terrace with a glazed link to the main hotel, and mediates the relationship between the original 19th century building and the hotel’s extension, a converted 1980s office building. A new garden was crated as part of the brief to create a pleasant amenity for diners and improve the visual relationship between the hotel, its grounds and the nearby historic City wall.
Working closely with the conservation department of York City Council and Historic England, our design responds to its unique historic environment with a mix of traditional and contemporary materials. A low overall profile ensures that the pavilion does not detract from the original Edwardian building.
