Following our extensive refurbishment of the Grand Hotel York (formerly the Cedar Court Grand) in 2010, we were approached by Splendid Hospitality to create a new hotel extension to accommodate an additional 100 guest rooms, retrofitting Roman House, an adjacent disused 1970s office block.

Whilst the decision to refurbish rather than demolish was more sustainably and economically viable, we had to overcome the challenges of the building’s poor aesthetic to meet the client’s aspirations for an appropriately elegant extension to its brand. We enlarged windows throughout, reconfiguring fenestration at ground floor level to create a visual colonnade with an additional floor of retail at lower ground level. A new contemporary mansard roof and two more floors of accommodation at the upper levels maximise views out across the city.

Integration between the new block and the existing Grade II* listed hotel has been carefully considered. A purpose-built glazed link helps mediate changes in level between the two buildings as well as rationalise circulation and mark the distinction between old and new. A new restaurant, The Rise, was added between the two buildings on the existing hotel terrace, with an attractive new garden visible from the both the restaurant and the City Wall beyond, creating a cohesive landscape for the hotel.
