Hanbury Hall was built in 1719 as a French Huguenot church, and has a rich and varied history, having been occupied by churches of various denominations until 1887, when Christ Church, Spitalfields purchased the building for use as their church hall.

After long years of use the hall was badly in need of refurbishment, and Mackenzie Wheeler were appointed as architects for a joint development project whereby the conversion of the upper floors of the building to residential was to fund the refurbishment of the hall on ground and first floors.
