The Uxbridge Central Library refurbishment project is the culmination of Mackenzie Wheeler’s involvement in the London Borough of Hillingdon’s programme to refurbish their entire library estate. The library occupies a purpose-built, split-level building, constructed in 1984, consisting of six levels laid out around a central atrium.

Mackenzie Wheeler were appointed to completely redesign the library interior, improving the display of books, IT provision and heritage display areas. Other areas of focus included improving the main entrance to make the library more approachable to casual visitors, the introduction of a cafe area, enhanced family facilities and childrens’ library, and better provision for temporary displays and performance.
